| The thoughts and feelings so far in this account are entirely Neila's. But Neila was not a native speaker of English--although her English was very good--so I have been her ghostwriter, translating the mixture of English and Portuguese that was our family language to English-only, and giving the text its final format. She reviewed the manuscripts and made suggestions as long as she was able. The first six chapters are the result and I believe are a faithful rendering of what she wanted.
Later, when she was no longer able to concentrate on telling her own story I have found it easier and more verisimilar to continue the story in my own voice; basing the account of her struggle on my own notes and recollections.
