T1-weighted image The magnetic resonance community has adopted nomenclature to signify the predominant contrast mechanism in an image since the choice of parameters affect the contrast between the various tissues of the brain.  This need not concern us, but for anyone interested The Basics of MRI website has a very good (though highly technical) explanation of MRI technology.
